Straight Outta Compton’s accuracy of N.W.A. biopic Defended by Director F. Gary Gray

The American music video, film director and directed Friday, Set It Off and The Negotiator, as well as the remake of The Italian Job, director F. Gary Gray, said that he's "very happy with the accuracy" of the Straight Outta Compton movie, that depicts the creation and eventual breakup of influential rap group N.W.A.

In the movie Straight Outta Compton due in theatres Friday, helmed by F. Gary Gray . The key details and scenes in the film, made the director rely on the accounts from surviving members of the Southern California group, that includes credited producers Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.

However, director F. Gary Gray acknowledged in an interview that the notable moments from the history of N.W.A. are not included in the film.

Director F. Gary Gray stated, "Obviously you can only do so much when you have two hours and 10 years and five guys in one movie, but I'm very happy with the accuracy, especially given that I got it from the members of N.W.A," Gray also said, "If it was something that I just Googled or got it from Wikipedia then it would maybe be a little bit questionable. But Ice Cube was there every day. Dr. Dre was there every day. It doesn't get any better than that."

For failing to directly address the group's sometimes-misogynist lyrics, the Straight Outta Compton movie faced criticism online, also the film's critics came out about Dr. Dre's 1991 attack on journalist Dee Barnes at a Hollywood nightclub. But director Gray said that he has a knowledge of the incident and the publicity it generated, however the director stated that "this movie is about N.W.A."

Director Gray also said, "It's about the group, the rise of the group and the subsequent following of the group and you can make five N.W.A. movies with all the information that is out there," the director added, "The first cut came in three hours and 30 minutes long. So we cut over an hour out of the movie so it was hard to cast the movie and it was hard to cut the movie. We couldn't get everything in."
