Robin Thicke ‘Blurred Lines’: No Retrial For Pharrell’s Marvin Gaye Lawsuit – ‘Got To Give It Up’ $2 Million Less

Upon the release of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," the singer and his co-writer Pharrell Williams were met with a lawsuit from Marvin Gaye's family, claiming the song had infringed copyright from the legendary singer's hit "Got to Give It Up" - a lawsuit they won back in March.

Now, months after the end of the Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines" trial that ended in a judge asking $7.3 million in compensation to Gaye's family, Thicke and Williams issued an appeal for a retrial, which U.S. District Judge John Kronstadt has denied, although taking $2 million from the original sum.

As Variety reports, the latest development on Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" trial came last Tuesday, when the jury's $7.3 million award to the Gaye estate was reduced to about $5.3 million, breaking it down as such: Gaye's family will now receive $3.2 instead of $4 million, while Williams' awarding profits came to $357,631 from $1.6 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaye's family had also asked an injunction for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," which is to say they were pushing for the song to be removed from distribution outlets - however, the family was granted a request for them to receive 50 percent royalty rate in songwriting and publishing revenues for the hit.

Back in 2013, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" turned into one of the most popular songs of the year, after co-writing with star music producer Williams - but Gaye's children were quick to file a lawsuit, pointing out the many similarities between the song and their father's 70s hit.

The 405 reports that this isn't where this story ends, however, as Williams' attorneys will be pursuing another appeal.

"We look forward to exercising our further remedies and ultimately achieving clarity on the difference between inspiration and copyright infringement," said Howard King, Pharrell's lawyer during the Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines" case.
