Leonardo DiCaprio Art: No Oscar, But ‘Titanic’ Actor Among 200 Biggest Art Collectors Worldwide

Over the past few years, the "Titanic" actor has turned into an Internet meme due to the fact that he's often nominated for an Oscar but is yet to receive the Academy Award after notorious work in movies like "The Aviator" and most recently "The Wolf of Wall Street" - but these days, it's Leonardo DiCaprio's art collection making news.

Specialized magazine ARTnews has included Leonardo DiCaprio's art collection in its yearly "200 list" of collectors, not only for his contemporary art but also for his comics, rare books and even fossils, a collection he has been growing for years.

This is the first time that Leonardo DiCaprio's art collection makes the list, but there's little shock considering how long he has been pursuing his love for beautiful things, with a collection he started with, according to Complex, a drawing by Basquiat; ever since, the 40 year-old has bought items by the likes of Sarah Lucas, Takashi Murakami, Elizabeth Peyton, Ed Ruscha and even Pablo Picasso.

DiCaprio started his collection circa 1996, fresh off the success of the Baz Luhrmann-directed "Romeo + Juliet" co-starring Claire Danes; in 2013, he also told The Wall Street Journal that his fossil collection, including dinosaurs, was the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

Back in 2013, the actor and producer teamed up with Christie's to organize a Leonardo DiCaprio art auction for charity that ended up earning $38 million, all of which went to conservational projects, as DiCaprio is famously very much involved with environmental issues.

Ever since the list came out reporting the very vast Leonardo DiCaprio art collection, news outlets around the world have made puns about his personal life, as the actor is famous for having dated some of the planet's most beautiful supermodel, as well as singer Rihanna.

According to Local Syr, other DiCaprio art ventures include co-chairing the annual Art + Film Gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as well as making appearances at Art Basel in both Switzerland and Miami.

In any case, private as the actor is, Leonardo DiCaprio's art collection sounds absolutely astonishing.
