Library Books Save Student From Gunshot In Shooting – ‘The Truth Is I was Almost Killed Tonight And God Intervened’

Library Books Save Student - An FSU student borrowed books from the library minutes before a shooting took place and he got saved thanks to them.

The student in question was Jason Derfuss, a 21 year-old senior at Florida State University. At around 12: 25 a.m. he was leaving the Strozier library when the events unfolded, USA Today reported.

At first, he heard a gunshot and recognized it for what it was, but failed to believe that it was actually that. Then, he turned around and saw a "normal-looking" student wearing a hoodie and walking up to another student.

Once close, he saw that the one with the hoodie fired two more shots with a handgun at point-blank range. He couldn't make out any of the faces, but he was able to react fast.

"I immediately turned around and sprinted to my car. I got in my car. I drove off. And as I drove off, I called my dad, who calmed me down. And he told me to call 911, so I did."

Derfuss didn't think anything of the library books just yet. He had two texts books with him: a 304-page tome on "Great Medieval Thinkers" by John Wyclif and a second one which stopped the bullet directly, NY Daily News noted.

The student said that the shooter was five feet away from him, but he hit his books. Derfuss was shot in the back and hence, the books in his backpack stopped the bullet.

It was three hours after the shooting took place when the student realized about the library books that had the bullet.

"I assumed I wasn't a target. I assumed I was fine. The truth is I was almost killed tonight and God intervened. I know conceptually He can do all things, but to physically witness the impossible and to be surrounded by such grace is indescribable."

Three other students resulted shot in the campus of FSU and the gunman is dead, the authorities reported and WESH noted.
