Aaliyah Movie, Awful - "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B," a Lifetime movie, was released last Sat. Since then, a backlash of harsh criticism took over Twitter, Instagram and most media.
Aaliyah Haughton was born in 1979 and died in a plane crash at the age of 22 in 2001. Lifetime decided to do a biopic movie about her. The only detail and major controversy was that the family did not agree with this.
Thus, the rights of her songs were not given to them; or the blessing of Aaliyah's family. So basically, in a lot of ways, the movie was doomed from its production.
Wendy Williams, the executive producer of Aaliyah's movie, took it to "The Wendy Williams Show" on Monday to talk about the movie and so many reactions against it.
"My 'Aaliyah' movie broke the internet. Whether you loved it or hated it, you watched. It was the second highest rated movie on cable this year," IB Times noted.
So, under these terms, Wendy Williams prefers to be talked about, even if it is to say the Aaliyah movie was awful, than not to be talked about at all.
The biggest criticisms, though, came from Timbaland. He produced Aaliyah's second album and was featured in the movie as one of the characters; which was another point down for the movie.
Apparently, the worst elements in the Aaliyah movie were the casting, on the one hand, and the lack of any original songs by Aaliyah. People couldn't fathom how a biopic movie of a singer can be done without any of her songs.
Getting back to Timbaland, his Instagram was plagued with images mocking the Aaliyah movie and calling it awful in different ways. One of them was with a direct message to Wendy Williams.
"Wendy Williams, you know you f*cked up, right?" the post read.
Then, there was another one featuring a "Men in Black" picture of Will Smith holding the laser which helped to erase the memory and said:
"Everyone that watched the Aaliyah movie look into the light."
Those were only two of the several ones the artist posted in response to the Aaliyah movie and how he felt about it.
So, even though the Aaliyah movie is not getting out of the "awful" sorts of criticisms, at least it's being watched, like Wendy Williams remarked. And it will continue being aired on Lifetime.
