A nonprofit nationwide network of food banks called "Feeding America" has estimated that there is one in six people from Florida that is suffering from hunger. Due to this, the Second Harvest Food Bank has set up an annual run in order to benefit those who are suffering from hunger.
University of Central Florida students are said to help in alleviating the hunger in the state as they are participating in the upcoming 2014 Runner's Classic run and all the proceeds are said to go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. The families that cannot afford to buy their Thanksgiving dinner will be the ones benefiting from the donations.
The annual run is said to offer 5K or 8K options for those who would like to run while a 5K walk and another kids' walk is also one of the choices. The event is said to be held at the Orlando World Center Marriott' scenic golf course on November 16, 2014 at 7:15 in the morning.
The participants are able to register online for $30 at RacerSignUp.com or they can visit the on-site stall until 6:30 in the morning at the day of the said event. Also, participants are encouraged to bring at least one can of food for donating and at the end of the race, all participants are to celebrate via a food-tasting festival.
According to Suzan Bunn, the promoter of the run and a professor at UCF, Thanksgiving is the time that everyone should have a meal and be blessed.
According to Greg Higgerson, the vice president of Second Harvest Food Bank, every bit helps and that there's a need for them to provide for the community and for the growing number of those who are in need.
Higgerson added that hunger is really a problem as one cannot recover from it pressing that there are lifelong consequences in not being able to get the proper nutrition. He added, "We are diminished as a community if people can't eat."
