Teal Pumpkin Project - It's a new idea that has been brought and popularized by a mother who has children with food allergies and wanted them not to feel left out of Halloween and enjoy it like everyone else. Want to know what it's about?
The Teal Pumpkin Project consists in offering non-food options for children. Turns out that there are lots of children with food allergies out there and in Halloween, most candies have some ingredient that can be nuts, almonds, etc. which are simply not digestible for them.
For instance, the mom that talks for NBC 15 states that her children, who are 8 and 5 years old, are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and sunflower. So, when they go out to look for candy, their mom has to go over the bags afterwards to check what each candy has.
Otherwise, the Halloween that is supposed to be a scary but fun even, turns out to be a really scary one for other reasons. That's why she did some research and ended up finding the Teal Pumpkin Project.
The idea is to put a teal pumpkin in the porch of the house to indicate that there are non-food treats inside. She hopes that in a future, all houses will have teal pumpkins.
"It's a really good idea, not only for people to offer non-food treats, putting a teal pumpkin out there, showing that they do have non-food treats, but also to raise awareness, and get people talking about food allergies and getting some questions answered," the mother of the children shared.
Also, a page has already been done for the Teal Pumpkin project, which suggests ideas as to what could be offered in each house. The items included are:
Glow sticks, bracelets, necklaces, pencils, pens, crayons or markers; bubbles, Halloween erasers or pencil toppers, mini slinkies, whistles, kazoos or noisemakers, bouncy balls, finger puppets or novelty toys.
Anyhow, the ideas are endless! The Teal Pumpkin Project could make Halloween an event that absolutely everyone can enjoy just as much.
