Electrolux Group is re-announcing a safety recall involving Frigidaire and Kenmore electric ranges originally recalled in 2009. These ranges pose a fire and burn hazard because the heating elements can malfunction in several ways. They include units turning on spontaneously without being switched on, failure to turn off after being switched off, and heating to different temperatures than selected by the user.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates roughly 203,000 Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges are affected.

Frigidaire and Kenmore Recalled Range Information

The recalled ranges were sold nationwide at Sears and independent appliance stores between June 2001 and August 2009, costing between $1,000 and $2,500. According to the report, "This recall re-announcement involves Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges. The smooth-top electric ranges have rear panel rotary knobs and digital displays. They were sold in the following colors: white, bisque, black, and stainless steel. The brand name, model, and serial number for each unit are located on the frame of the drawer at the bottom of the unit when the drawer is opened."

Look for the following model and serial numbers for each brand:

Repair or Refund Options

Since the initial recall, Electrolux has received reports of:

  • 212 incidents of the ranges malfunctioning

  • 14 fires

  • 8 injuries involving burns and smoke inhalation

The repair or refund option depends on your specific range model and serial number. Here's what you can expect:

  • Repairable Range: If your range is repairable, Electrolux will schedule a free inspection and repair.

  • Non-Repairable Range: If your range cannot be repaired, you'll receive a $50 electronic gift card and reimbursement of up to $60 for appliance removal. To claim these, submit proof of purchase for a new range and the haul-away fee receipt.

Important Safety Information

Consumers with recalled ranges should contact Electrolux immediately. As a safety precaution, avoid leaving anything on the range when not in use to minimize the risk of fire and burns.
