The fresh organic basil recall due to Salmonella fears has just gotten bigger. Melissa's brand is joining the party, recalling their basil sold at Dierberg's stores in Illinois and Missouri. This comes on the heels of Trader Joe's recall of Infinite Herbs' basil in 29 states. We've got everything you need to know.
What Basil Is Under Recall
Two brands of organic basil have been recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination.
- Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil in 2.5-oz clamshell packaging (UPC 8 18042 02147 7) was sold at Trader Joe's and Fruit Center Marketplace stores from February 1 to April 6, 2024.
- Melissa's brand fresh organic basil comes in 2.0-oz (UPC 0 45255 14142 9) and 4.0-oz (UPC 0 45255 14439 0) clamshell packages and was available at Dierberg's stores in Illinois and Missouri from February 10 to February 20, 2024.
Both brands are labeled "Product of Colombia" on the back. The recalled basil is likely past its expiration date and should no longer be available for purchase. However, if you have any basil from these brands at home, discard it immediately even if it appears fresh.
What To Do If You've Purchased Recalled Basil
Consumers who purchased the recalled basil should throw it away immediately, even if it appears fresh. Wash surfaces that may have come in contact with the basil, including countertops, cutting boards, and containers. Thorough handwashing is crucial to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Salmonella Symptoms and Risks
Salmonella can cause serious illness, especially in young children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. If you think you or someone you know may be affected, seek immediate medical attention.
