We here at Food World News are all about saving the food, and that's why TikTok's flat croissant craze is our fav trend at the moment. It seems the trend first took hold at bakeries across Korea but has made its way to pastry shops in Seattle, L.A., the Bay Area, and beyond, where the puffy, airy delights have been created from scratch as flattened, crisped versions of their predecessors to give the crunch of a croissant's outer layer all the way through.

Some might consider them an abomination, but I'm happy to eat anything remotely resembling my favorite morning-time treat. Still, the at-home trend interests me more, allowing me to make better use of that Costco-size case of bakery croissants.

What is a Flat Croissant?

The magic of the flat croissant lies in its ingenious simplicity. Simply take a rolling pin to a day-or-two-old croissant, thin it out, and either bake it or fry it up in a little butter to make it extra rich and crispy.

The amazing part? You can top it with almost anything, because croissants pair well with both savory and sweet flavors. Top your newly flattened version with some fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, and tangy balsamic vinegar for a savory delight, or indulge your inner child with a smear of Nutella and sliced strawberries and bananas. The options are endless.

More Than Just a Second Life: A Flat-Out Delicious Revelation

In a world obsessed with fresh-baked perfection, the at-home flat croissant trend celebrates resourcefulness. It's a brilliant way to extend the life of your croissants, minimizing waste and maximizing flavor. Home cooks and chefs alike are rediscovering the potential of this versatile pastry, proving that sometimes, the simplest ideas are the most delicious.
