In a recent interview, the Les Miserables actress addresses Anne Hathaway's hate - in the past, she's confessed that after her Academy Award win, she decided to lay low for a while because people were sick of her. Since her critic smash performance as Fantine won her accolades from every award ceremony in 2013, Anne Hathaway hate has turned into an Internet phenomenon, so much that there's even a word for it: Hathahate.
Recently, Harpers Bazaar Magazine interviewed the actress, and one of the topics addressed was the hype over the Anne Hathaway hate over the past year or so. The actress confessed that she was aware of the Hathahate (which is the name the Internet has given to this particular brand of being annoyed by a celebrity), when the day after winning the Oscar she bumped into an article on the very topic of the wave of Anne Hathaway hate that was taking over the media at the time.
She first saw it after Googling herself looking for pregnancy rumors - she and her friends were brainstorming a Funny or Die video about how long pregnancy rumors went on in tabloids "like, could we get Jen Aniston to talk about how long she's actually been gestating, according to the tabloids," Hathaway says. As she looked herself up, Anne bumped into an article called "Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?"
After seeing the whole thing with the Hathahate for the first time, Anne reached a sort of crisis. She was going through a time where a lot of things were happening: the critical acclaim, the awards, having just gotten married to fellow actor Adam Shulman.
So, what's with the Anne Hathaway hate? At the time, the press was having a field day calculating what it was that made people cringe all over the world. Now, the consensus seems to be that, for many, Anne looks fake: people don't buy her humble approach and just generally find her annoying - or, perhaps, too perfect.
