Losing Weight When You're Asleep

Do you know how much weight you lose when you're asleep?

In one hour of sleep, most people burn 0.4 to 0.5 calorie for every pound of body weight. For example, a 150-pound person would multiply 150 by 0.4 or 0.5 to get 60 to 75 calories used in one hour of sleep. After eight hours of sleep, that person has burned 480 to 500 calories. To lose 1 pound of weight, you need to expend 3,500 calories more than you consume. While the amount of food consumed must be restricted to create a calorie-deficit, it's possible for a 150-pound person to lose about 1 pound weekly by burning those 500 calories every night. The number of calories lost may be significantly more or less, depending on how much you weigh and how long you sleep. These are your figures.

The body continues to burn calories when you're sleeping because it needs energy to keep the brain, heart, lungs and all other vital systems working. Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the term used to define the number of calories required to maintain internal physiological functions while you sleep. Another common term often used synonymously with BMR -- resting metabolic rate, or RMR -- measures energy used at rest during any time of the day. That's why the National Sleep Foundation suggests seven to eight hours of sleep for most adults. So add these meats to your list of foods that will help you lose weight.

Remember this: Eating lamb can put you to sleep.

Tryptophan, an amino acid found in most meats like lamb or turkey, has demonstrated powerful sleep-inducing effects. A recent study among insomniacs found that just 1/4 gram-about what you'll find in a skinless chicken drumstick or three ounces of lean turkey meat-was enough to significantly increase hours of deep sleep translated to slimming. Researchers from the University of Colorado found that dieters consumed 6 percent fewer calories when they got enough sleep. The National Sleep Foundation suggests seven to eight hours of sleep for most adults. So add these meats to your list of foods that will help you lose weight.

Remember this too: When you're awake, you tend to eat more. That means you will have more calorie intake.

According to a recent study at The Salk Institute where it found out that the the longer we stay up, the more calories we consume.

The scientists speculated that the best way to cut down on calorie intake may be simply to get more sleep, so they asked people who ate over the course of 14 hours each day to cut their grazing times to no more than 11 hours a day, and to sleep more of the time. After 16 weeks, subjects lost an average of 3.5 percent of their excess body weight-just by going to bed earlier.

To have a healthy waistline, get at least seven hours of sleep per night. You don't only burn calories, you also end up having a voluptuous shape!
