Thin Mints Ingredients & History: How The Girl Scout Cookies Came To Be

With the Girl Scout cookies becoming a big hit in the US, the thin mints also gained wide popularity.

Girl Scout cookies were sold by the Girl Scouts of the USA for the sake of fundraising. The girls who participated in this program won prizes for their effort as well. The cookie sale began by the Mistletoe Troop in Oklahoma at a local high school. Over time, it grew to other cities and gained popularity.

Between the years 1933 to 1935, troops in other cities also organized the sale. Philadelphia saw the first organized official sale come to life. Troops organized sales while they also emphasized on marketing the cookie sale across different cities.

The sale became a huge concept in America and few recipes became quite popular, out of which thin mints was considered one among the best-seller.

Girls scouts sold cookies in the neighborhood, to friends, colleagues and closed circles mostly. However, with its popularity, they have started encouraging sales only in cookie booths where people are welcome to come buy their cookies. In such booths, girls sell their cookies with the help of an adult supervision. This system was adopted instead of door to door sale.

During the time of world war, the girl scouts sold calendars as well since they were short of flour, sugar, and butter. In 2007, the cookie sales went up to an estimate of about 200 million boxes.

Thin mints were not called thin mints when it was introduced. It was called cooky mints, after which it was called chocolate mints. The cookie got its name thin mints only in the year 1963.

Apart from Shortbread and Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, thin mints were considered one of the most popular. The thin mints Girl Scout cookies are actually wafer dipped in a minted chocolate coating.
