Hangover: What Causes It and What You Need to Know About the Morning After You Drink

It is once again the season to be merry and jolly. And as December is in full bloom, we have another good reason to attend family reunions, office parties, a long overdue meet-up with a friend we have not seen in forever, and of course to fill our bellies up with wine, beer, and eggnog.

However, this may also mean that it's time of the year where meet that thing that always ends up killing our vibe: the hangover. When we really think about it, it's kind of ridiculous considering magazines always set aside a huge space for those problems. Every December, a wide variety of "cures" for hangovers are available. From the ones you can find on the shelves of your local pharmacies to the household remedy to feeling crappy the next morning after what seemed to be a great night. The problem is however, the scientific community still can't quite figure out which part of your booze is to be blamed.

A few hundred people have always asked why there are people who wake up in the morning, after partying all night feeling horrible even when they just drank a glass of two of draft beer, while others who practically drank almost every single drink known to mankind in the party can still be at the office at 8 a.m. the next day all alert and feel like he's ready for another party? Does age have something to do with our ability get rid of hangover?

The most common scientific reason for hangover is that alcohol acts like a diuretic, hence increasing the person's urine production. However, there are people who don't drink water during a party and ending up having a mouth as dry as the desert and a body that doesn't have enough hydration to work properly.

According to studies though, the connection between dehydration and hangovers are totally different. As an example, experts have seen no apparent connection between increased levels of vasopressin, which is associated to dehydration, and the degree of hangover. So even if some experts are all in unison that dehydration is a major factor for the dizziness and the thirst, there are still other factors at hand.
