Zatarain’s Recalls Red Beans and Rice Over Dairy Concern

Zatarain's, a food and spice company founded in New Orleans and known for their variety of spice dinners and rice mixes have issued a food recall regarding one of their products - the 8 ounce Red Beans and Rice Original box.

The manufactured boxes had a best by date of July 31 and had been distributed in the Eastern side of the United States as well as the Mid West.

The reason for the recall was announced because the Red Beans and Rice Original box could possibly contain dairy ingredients.

The dairy is sourced directly from one of their own products - Creamy Parmesan Rice Mix. The Creamy Parmesan Rice mix is actually a partial ingredient in the Red Beans and Rice package.

The labelling did not indicate the dairy content and may pose as a high risk for those with allergies towards milk and other dairy products. If not treated quickly, this can be life threatening. Dairy is part of the Big Allergy 8. Other allergens that can be life threatening include peanuts, wheat, egg and sesame.

Food manufacturers are urged to label their food packages on the outside with possible food allergens to minimize risks when it comes to food safety.

Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice Original 8 ounce box has the package UPC NUMBER: 7142909849.

For supplier and distributor references, the shipping dates involved in the recall are dated August 7, 2015 through September 29, 2015.

The following states where the boxes have been shipped to are the following: FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, and WI.

Retail chains and branches have been contacted already to remove the product off the shelves and warehouses. Distributors have also been contacted to stop the supply chain.

Thankfully, no allergic reactions have been reported to date, as announced online.
