It may be hard for a family to keep going on its own when the mother is away. After all, she is the one managing the kids and the household.
This is what exactly happened to the Smith family. Tammy Smith, 43 years old and a mother of 11 children, was on her way to do a routine check on an elderly couple when she was hit by a semi-truck. Mrs. Smith has been on a vegetative state after this incident. She also experienced brain injury, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
Thankfully, she went out of a coma after Thanksgiving. Time reports that Tammy's husband was just beside her when she called out his name.
Her husband, Bruce, recalls the event to People.com, "If you've ever had a child take their first step, that's what it was like."
The Hospitality House of Charlotte is the place where Bruce currently stays. This institution can let family members reside for free in the middle of a medical crisis. While he stays in this place, family and friends have been taking care of the children and running the household.
Family and friends gave effort and time for the Smith family. "It's taking 17 people to do what she was doing by herself - getting the kids to all of their activities. It's been amazing to watch," Bruce says in a report from People.
Tammy's physical recovery should be well, the doctors said. However, the damage to her brain is still being determined.
There is a big possibility that the recovery process might be a long one. The married couple has fewer resources as both have been out of work since the incident. The father of 11 said that it has been a challenge to pay their bills. A GoFundMe page has been made for updates on Tammy's condition. So far, they've raised around $10,000 to help the family's expenses.
