Hollywood Does Not Prioritize Women and Minorities in Director Jobs, Study Shows

Even this year, the gender gap has gathered a wide forum of discussion. From Jennifer Lawrence's outburst about finding out male co-stars had higher numbers, to Ava Duvernay's glorious speech at the Elle awards tackling sexism in Hollywood, this may be time for a permanent solution to this ongoing issue.

Time states that a recent report from the Director's Guild of America shows that an astounding 82.4% of white men had the main grasp for the directing jobs.  This study was conducted from 2013 to 2014.

The study's result as shown in greater detail here, show that the Minority Females comprise only of 1.3%. The Caucasian Females, a struggling 5.1%. The Minority Males only held about 11.2 %.

The total percentages for women only sum up to 6.4% out of the 376 directors of released films from 2013 to 2014. The numbers for women of color were even slimmer for a shocking1.3%.

The report shows that the Caucasian males were given more director jobs at 82.4%. The minorities were only a total of 12.5%.

DGA Diversity Task Force Co-Chair, Bethany Rooney said, "The numbers paint a grim outlook for diverse film directors - women in particular."

She added, "Much like our recent reports on television director diversity, we hope this report will put a magnifying glass on a system that makes it disproportionately challenging for talented women and minority film directors to get hired."

During the study period, it was found that some of the major studios did not produce a woman-directed film. It includes big names such as Warner Bros, Disney, the Weinstein Company or Open Road, based on the reports.

DGA Diversity Task Force co-chair Todd Holland said, "The numbers indicate that women and minority directors are virtually shut out of this multibillion-dollar industry that has a deep financial and cultural impact on our global society.  In order to make progress, the film studios need to take this information and commit to becoming real agents of change with solutions."

It is time to make a change for the women and the minorities.
