Study Shows Men have Better Navigation Skills While Women arr Good at Finding Things Locally

The differences of men and women have long been debated by many. They can't seem to find a common ground as to which side is more powerful.  Many cited that women are good at finding things than men. At home when we lose something the first name we call is always "Mom" because she always knows where to find things. However, an article in Indian Express said that new study confirmed that men have a more effective sense of direction and much faster in finding the destination than women.

The researchers found that the results of the study can be explained in evolutionary terms. Carl Pintzka, a medical doctor and PhD candidate at Norwegian University of Science and Technology said that in the ancient times, men were hunters and women were gatherers. Because of this, the brains of men and women probably evolved differently. He added that some researchers have found that women are better at finding things at home and that men are faster in finding the house itself.

The team decided to explore more on how much sex hormone affect the navigation skills by giving women testosterone and make them go through a task of finding a direction in a virtual environment. They used functional magnetic resonance images or FMRI, the team found that men in the study took shortcuts and oriented themselves on using more cardinal directions. This allowed them to use a different part of the brain compared to the women who participated in the study. However, when some women got the testosterone on their tongue, some of them were able to orient themselves in using the cardinal direction better. Pintzka used an MRI scanner to check the differences in brain activity between men and women when it comes to orienting themselves. It was found that men's sense of direction was more effective as they got to the destination faster. The men solved 50 per cent more tasks than the women.
