A total of 30 students from Boston College suffered from upset stomach after eating at a Chipotle restaurant. According to school officials, eight of those who complained of not feeling well after eating at the restaurant were members of the basketball team.
Recently the Denver based Chipotle restaurant also had an outbreak of E.coli however the said Boston chain incident could not yet be determined if they were linked.
According to the reports from Boston College, all those that came to the school's Health Services , the 30 students that complained of an upset stomach suffered the same symptoms and the "common factor" among all of them is that they have eaten at the Chipotle restaurant which is in the Cleveland Circle neighborhood very near the Boston College campus.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health was immediately notified by the school where an investigation was then conducted.
"We cannot confirm a cause of the illness at this time, but we are coordinating with Boston public health officials to determine the cause," said Scott Zoback, a spokesman for the public health agency.
According to an email from representative of Chipotle Mexican Grill Chris Arnold, the Chipotle branch has been closed until further notice so that the company can collaborate with the local health officials in their investigation of the incident.
Arnold added that the company has not found any evidence that would suggest that the incident is related to previous cases. He also noted that the there are have been none confirmed cases of E. coli outbreak connected to Chipotle in Massachusetts.
Eight basketball player have been reportedly affected by the gastrointestinal symptoms. This according to Chris Cameron, a spokesman for the school's athletics department.
On Sunday morning the Head Coach Jim Christian said he got a call from his two players suggesting that they have suffered a form of food poisoning,
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that outbreaks such as the incident has affected a total number of 52 people in nine states however the ingredient which causes the sickness has yet to be identified..
There are more than 1,900 Chipotle branches al over the states and has also reiterated that all branches will implement stricter food safety locations, has said it is adopting stricter food safety measures.
