The New York Film Critics Circle is an organization of film reviewers and publications that are based in New York. It awards movies with an outstanding performance every year. The circle's awards are usually considered an indication of an Oscar nomination, which is held every February.
This year, the circle has awarded Carol the best picture of 2015. The film was directed by Todd Haynes, and starred Cate Blanchett. The setting was in the 1950s New York. Blanchett portrayed a housewife who meets a shop clerk an aspiring photographer (Rooney Mara) which later on led to an affair.
The film won 3 other recognition for best director, best screenplay, and best cinematography. Unfortunately, neither Blanchett nor Mara won an acting award for the film. Instead, the organization has awarded Michael Keaton the best actor award for his role in Spotlight, and the best actress went to Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn. Kristen Stewart bagged the best supporting award for her part in Clouds of Sils Maria.
Inside Out was named best animated film, the latest honor for the Pixar movie after it was named best animated film by the National Board of Review and received 14 Annie Award nominations on Tuesday.
Mad Max: Fury Road which was selected as the best film by the National Board of Reviews (NBR) was disregarded by the NYFCC, so were the Oscar hopefuls The Hate Eight, The Martian, Beasts of No Nation, and Room, which individually snatched an award from the NBR. Other Oscar contenders who didn't get recognition from the NYFCC were Steve Jobs, Joy, Concussion, The Revenant, Anomalisa, Truth, The Danish Girl, Straight Outta Compton, The Big Short, Amy, Sicario, and Tangerine. Meanwhile, Thomas McCarthy's Spotlight only bagged one award from the Circle: Keaton's best actor award.
Last year, Richard Linklater's Boyhood was one of the big winners among the NYFCC, bagging home 3 awards.
