The Sonic Screwdriver Is Coming Back In The 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special, But Is Steven Moffat Leaving The Show?

It looks like the upcoming 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special isn't just going to be about the return of River Song, because it looks like the trusty sonic screwdriver is coming back as well!

According to io9, this year's 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special will be titled 'The Husbands of River Song,' and the first promotional photo for the episode features the Twelfth Doctor with his wife (Alex Kingston) as well as a large, bright red, slightly menacing robot.

But wait, what's that in the Doctor's hand?

Peter Capaldi appears to be holding a brand-new sonic screwdriver, an upgrade from the one he lost in the first Series Nine episode 'The Magician's Apprentice.' The decision to bring back the Doctor's favorite toy may have been brought on by several complaints about Twelve's sonic sunglasses, which look good on him but don't have the same appeal as the sonic screwdriver.

So is 'Doctor Who' going back to the formula that worked so well for the show when River Song was around? Showrunner Steven Moffat recently confirmed with Radio Times that he wanted to bring the character back because - gasp! - he might be leaving?

"I'll be honest, I brought River Song back in because I thought there's a possibility I'd never write it ['Doctor Who'] again so that'll be my goodbye, but also I really fancied it," Moffat admitted, adding that the character was one of his favorite characters to write for.

"I hadn't written River for a couple of years and I'd always loved writing for her and I'd missed her," he confessed. "I thought, given that I'm knackered at the end of a series, what would be a treat for me would be getting Alex Kingston back onto 'Doctor Who.'"

The wait for 'The Husbands of River Song' will not be too long, as the 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special will air only three weeks after the current series finale. 'Hell Bent' will premiere on December 5 while the Christmas Special is scheduled to air on December 25.
