The latest Whisky Bible by Jim Murray was released in November and he named the 90-proof Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as the best in the world. One of the many awesome things about the Crown Royal is that a 750 ml bottle would go for only $50. While the best things in life are said to be free, the next best seems to be very affordable. You get a super fancy bottle for it too.
Jim Murray told CBC that he would travel the world for five months to sample the different whiskeys from different distillers. He said that he would try out over 1,000 different whiskeys in that time period. "I spit every single one, so that when I make these decisions I am entirely [coherent]," Murray said.
He also maintains a very strict regimen to ensure quality excellence in his reviews. "If I feel I have a slight cold, I stop." He adds, "Very, very strict rules. My staff can't wear any perfume, there's no cooking allowed anywhere-everything is controlled."
It is no surprise that whiskey lovers have flocked to Manitoba to get their hands on the now-famous Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. Alastair Kidd, whiskey brand director at Diageo Canada, said to reporters, "Since the announcement went out, we've had calls from coast to coast asking for more product because people have gone in looking for this, they've bought all available on the shelves."
When Murray visited the Gimli distillery where the Crown Royal is made, he was close to having a spiritual experience. "I absolutely loved, loved, loved it there. I was there early spring, the loons were calling, the ice was cracking. I'm not religious, but it was close to something profound," the whiskey master shared.
