Different Types of Meditation and It's Effects on the Brain

Every time people would hear the word meditation, they would often link it to religion, not knowing that meditation has numerous benefits. It is often opted when one is awfully stressed as it helps clear and calm the mind. As per Web Md meditation is a beneficial for stress reduction.

Charles L. Raison, MD, clinical director of the Mind-Body Program at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta stated that individuals who practice meditation can choose among wide variety of practices.

Raison also participated in a study which pointed out that meditation can improve both physical and emotional responses towards stress.

The study then revealed that "people who meditated regularly for six weeks showed less activation of their immune systems and less emotional distress when they were put in a stressful situation."

These may only be the benefits of meditation as a whole, but the Mental Health Daily was able to pinpoint the types of mediation and the way each meditation technique compliments the brain.

There are three different types of meditation, first is the Mindfulness Mediation known as Vipassana, in which mindfulness is being focused on. As per the website, this meditation technique is being practiced while the eyes are closed, and all attention is being focused on breathing (inhaling and exhaling). One must focus the breathing through the nostrils. Upon doing so, one must acknowledge the distraction that he/she would come across, but won't react to it. After acknowledging the though, one would resume on the breathing focus.

Next is the transcendental meditation or TM where in the focus in on effortless transcending. Where in the person would have to repeat a certain mantra for 10-20 minutes. It is often given by the instructor. It involves sitting down on a comfortable position and turning the attention inwards.

Third is the loving-kindness meditation known as Tibetan Buddhism which focuses on concentration. This meditation technique is commonly described as the logical deconstruction of the reality of objects experienced in meditation and additionally, concentration to develop emotions such as compassion, loving-kindness, or selflessness.
