An exciting new technological innovation could possibly provide internet speed that is a hundred times faster than the Wi-Fi we use at the present.
As per Mashable, the company called Velmenni has taken technology out of the labs and is currently rolling demos into actual workplaces and commercial environments in Tallin, Estonia.
Light fidelity or Li-Fi is capable of obtaining a speed of 1 GB per second, 100 times the rate of standard Wi-Fi. It uses off-the-shelf LED lights which flicker in an undetectable speed to transmit data incredibly fast. It was invented in 2011 by Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh and has been capable of achieving almost 224 Gbps.
"Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through the light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the internet in their office space," Deepak Solanki, CEO of Velmenni, told IBMTimes UK.
Apart from the extensive Internet advancement that Li-Fi could help provide, this technological innovation is also beneficial for smart home appliances. The lights could illuminate a room and at the same time help create a network for devices to interact with one another.
Compared to Wi-Fi signals which can go through the walls, the light coming from the LED light bulbs cannot penetrate through walls, therefore, anyone outside the room will not be able to intercept with the ongoing wireless transmission. A safe and secure manner of transmitting data.
Oledcomm and pureLiFi, which was founded by the inventor himself, Harald Haas are just two of the several companies that introduced Li-Fi to the market.
Kits currently are on the market to early adopters for the installation of Li-Fi networks in offices and homes. pureLiFi declares the rate of speed of 10 Mbps.
