When Queen 'She Ill' tells you to put your phone down, you best put your phone down. Erykah Badu was indeed not messing around when she told the audience at the recent Soul Train Awards to focus on her as she performed her track called - you guessed it right; Phone Down. Even singer and actor Tyrese Gibson, one of the front row audience members, wasn't able to dodge Badu's bullet of scolding. "Tyrese, are you on your phone?" Badu asks him. "You're in the front row on national TV and you're on your phone?" Badu, Soul Train Awards host, cruises the crowd and snatches the phones of the 'distracted' ones.
She then sings "I can make you put your phone down as we cruise through the city. You ain't gon' text no one when you wit' me." Apart from Badu's distractive smartphones conquest, one of the highlights of the night was her outfits. In an interview with the Associated Press, she revealed that she directs her own videos, picks her own clothes, and basically does everything with her artwork, and hosting the 2015 Soul Train awards would be a great opportunity for her to expose her art to the air. Badu also hosted the said event in 1998, which is a different experience for her because in the recent event, she was given the pleasure of writing her own material as an associate producer. To her, seeing her words and sense of humour crystalize is unique and self-serving.
Airing on Sunday, November 29th, 8 PM EST on Bet and Centric, the 2015 Soul Train Awards will showcase performances from American recording artist and actress Brandy, R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, Billboard slayer and recording artist Jeremih and a whole lot more.
