Judging by America's emoji usage one thing is clear: it loves pizza. A new study published by SwiftKey reveals that the Pizza emoji is the most widely used digital food character in the country.
The famous pie was trailed by the cup of coffee and chicken leg. Overall, the top 10 was dominated by junk food and snacks with zero vegetable characters making the cut. However, when you analyze the data on a state-by-state level, you can see that some regions of America like using one particular vegetable emoji: the eggplant.
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, New York, or Nevada all count the eggplant as their most used emoji. Eater believes the image's popularity in those states boils down to its use as a phallic symbol, and we're inclined to agree.
In other interesting state emoji trends, Washington, the birth place of Starbucks, is the only to have the coffee cup as its most used character.
The tropical location of Hawaii has a pineapple as its state emoji while the freezing state of Alaska features the ramen emoji as its number one.
What's most bizarre is Texas choice of emoji. For a state with such a widely recognized cuisine (Barbecue, Tex-Mex, etc.) you'd think that their most used emoji would represent this fact. Instead the lone star state counts a bunch of grapes as its most commonly used emoji.
This list may change radically next year when Unicode introduces a new bunch of food items into the list. Some candidates for inclusion in the next update due in 2016 include:
Croissant, Avocado, Cucumber, Bacon, Potato, Carrot, Baguette bread, Green salad, Shallow pan of food (paella), Stuffed flatbread (kebab), Clinking glasses, Tumbler glass (whisky), Spoon.
Which ones are you hoping to see on your phone in the near future?
