The Truth Behind Food Allergies

Food allergies are common, most especially in children, but taking in precautions can sometimes go overboard. As per the Web Md, almost a third of US citizens suffer from food allergies which is published in The Journal of the American Medicinal Association. This may be a lot but only 5% of children and 4% of teens and adults truly suffer from food allergies.

Most people would normally assume that they have "food allergies" when they don't. Experts stated however that people doesn't really know the depth of the term and would often misuse it.

As per Marc Riedl, MD,MS who worked on the food allergy study in The Journal of the American Medical Association and is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine; stated that it is often used to describe "unpleasant experience"."Unfortunately, the term 'allergy' is sometimes used by the public or health care providers to describe any unpleasant experience patients have with eating food, including 'feeling bad,'".

CBS News then added that most kids undergo painful tests by parents who dwell into common misconceptions regarding food allergies. It is also a common misconception that food allergies are rare. As per the website, nearly 12 million people in the US have food allergies.

Another misconception is also stated that food allergies aren't life-threatening. One of the most common severe allergic reactions is Anaphylaxis, which attacks an individual rapidly and can be intensely fatal. It was also stated on the website that contrary to popular belief that some allergies can take days to appear, it normal occurs just within minutes to two hours after ingestion.

A statement "a little won't hurt" is not applicable at all. If some is indeed allergic "a little" isn't applicable, even the slightest consumption can be fatal.
