Martin Sheen Praises Son Charlie Sheen on Announcing HIV Status

After Charlie Sheen spoke out to the public about his HIV status, Martin Sheen, his father, reveals his thoughts.

Martin applauded his son for speaking out about his illness and also for having the courage to go public with his diagnosis. He said this at an event, staged at the Ritz-Carlton resort in Naples, Florida. Charlie Sheen publicly revealed his state of health in an interview with Today's Matt Lauer.

In the interview with Matt Lauer, Charlie publicly announced that he was diagnosed about four years ago. He had to consult a specialist because he suffered from headaches, migraines and sweating in bed.

The news was not easy for Charlie to say in public. Martin said that his son had been getting his wits together for several months and everybody close to Charlie encouraged him to do it. ".. he kept backing away... because it was like going to his own execution, I guess."

According to Naples, Martin said that that was the most difficult thing that Charlie has ever done in his life. ".. he kind of sealed it when he called Matt Lauer and asked if he could go on" Martin added.

Martin saw his son on Saturday night with his wife to support Charlie. He could not believe the courage his son had to show on screen, alone and revealing something personal to him. ".. that was my son."

Charlie also shared that he does not have the details of how he contracted HIV but swore that he did not transmit the disease to anyone else. The reason he is telling his story now is because he wants to help people and spread awareness.

Martin hopes that the day that Charlie spoke out would be the first day of the rest of his son's life as a free man , according to People.
