Did you know you could be jailed for breastfeeding? That's what happened to one woman who was caught breastfeeding--while drinking. The mother of three was drinking beer while breastfeeding her 6-month-old girl in a restaurant.
Tasha Adams, 28, was eating pizza and spinach dip with her parents after a funeral for a family friend, according to the NY Daily News. When her baby began to cry, the mother of three began to breastfeed her. Unfortunately, Adams also happened to be drinking beer at the time, according to ABC News.
When Jackie Conners, an off-duty waitress, saw that the woman was breastfeeding after drinking about three drinks. She reported her to the upper management of Gusano's Restaurant, but didn't receive a response. Finally, Conners called her mother, wondering what to do about the situation. She then called the police, according to ABC News.
It's probably a good thing that Adams was detained. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that mothers wait two hours after drinking before breastfeeding, and that new moms shouldn't drink alcohol frequently while still breastfeeding. Alcohol actually goes into a woman's breast milk, and researchers aren't sure exactly how alcohol will affect a newborn's brain.
In the case of Adams, she was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Yet these charges were dropped because there wasn't enough evidence to prove that Adams was drunk enough to harm her child, according to NY Daily News. Adams maintains that she wasn't drunk enough to harm her child in any way. She also stated that she wasn't aware it wasn't legal to breastfeed while drinking.
The recent incident highlights the importance of being responsible with alcohol-especially when it comes to breastfeeding.
