You may want to put down that peanut butter. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has put out an alert to consumers that recommends they avoid eating certain peanut butter, cheese, salsa and spreads produced by Parkers Farm Acquisition, LLC. The state agriculture department product sampling found that some of the products were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Consuming products contaminated with this bacteria can cause listeriosis. This disease can cause fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. While healthy people rarely contract listeriosis, it can sometimes be fatal in infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
Currently, there have been no known cases of illness associated with the products, according to a news release. However, Parkers Farm Acquisition has issued a voluntary recall of all products possibly contaminated. You can find a full list here. Officials urge consumers who have purchased these products to return them to the place of purchase, or discard them.
The products can be found nationwide under the Parkers Farm, Parkers, Happy Farms, Central Markets, Hy-Top, Amish Classic, Say Cheez, Win Schuler, and Bucky Badger labels. They can also be found in several retail stores across the country.
