As Twitter exploded moments after Ronda Rousey was knocked out by Holly Holm at UFC 193 in Melbourne, one one of the recurring sentiments was that Rousey's loss proved that the ridiculous arguments over a hypothetical Rousey vs. Floyd Mayweather bout were just that: ridiculous.
As karma continues to descend upon Ronda Rousey after her shock defeat, the humbled Californian has found an unlikely comfort in a most unexpected place.
As well as talking a good game against Holm in the lead up to her second round knockout, which left her in a Melbourne hospital overnight, Rousey had been involved in a long-running verbal battle with boxing great Floyd Mayweather.
Yet, as much as the temptation for Mayweather to stick the boot in must have been high after UFC 193 at Etihad Stadium on Sunday night, he instead offered Rousey something resembling compassion.
Celebs from Donald Trump to Lady Gaga have completely dissed Ronda after her loss, but despite Floyd’s history with Ronda, the world-famous boxer didn’t have anything nasty to say about the MMA fighter. In fact, he gave a very logical, cordial answer.
“Oh, I don’t know. I don’t speak on nobody’s situation,” Mayweather told MLive.com.“Just in boxing period, contact sports period, you win some, you lose some. I don’t know about this fight, I just know that you win some and you lose some. It basically comes with the territory.”
Rousey and Mayweather have been involved in a bitter war of words since 2014, triggered by the latter responding, “I don’t even know who he is,” when asked about the UFC star, per Liam FitzGibbon of Fox Sports.
As a result, plenty have been waiting for Mayweather’s verdict since Rousey was knocked out in Melbourne, Australia. But the boxer was silent on social media Saturday night and Sunday.
Rapper 50 Cent, meanwhile, claimed on Instagram that he was posting a meme mocking Rousey on Mayweather's behalf.
The post, which has edited Rousey onto a famous image of fictional character Rocky Balboa tending to a dying Apollo Creed.
"Floyd told me to post this. He want me to do the dirty work," he wrote in the post.
While Ronda hasn’t responded to anyone’s reactions, she did break her silence on Instagram following her loss on November 15 to thank fans and reassure them that she’ll be back fighting after taking a little break.
