First USDA Organic-Certified Restaurant Opens in California

The Organic Coup, organic-certified restaurant, opened is first location in Pleasanton, California, featuring a menu that contains 95% organic dishes. From chicken, vegetables, breads, and sides to sodas, organic food lovers are sure to find something that would suit their tastes.

The restaurant is considered to be the first USDA-certified organic fast food restaurant in the country. The Organic Coup offers a small range of menu items: fried chicken sandwich, fried chicken bowl, fried chicken wrap, side of caramel-covered popcorn, and some beverages. All of these items (except the beverages) feature their signature, organic chicken breast which is fried in Nutiva coconut oil.

The use of the word "coup" is intentional. They have been wanting "to change industry standards when it comes to great food fast."

Founder Erica Welton, a former buyer for Costco, said she pitched the idea for Organic Coup two years ago. "We were always on the go and usually the best choice we had for food was Chipotle," Welton told FoxNews.com. "They've done a really great job on the non-GMO front but somebody needed to take it all the way."

Organic Coup is for everyone who loves to eat healthy and organic food. "They don't want their chicken raised with antibiotics and they don't want their produce to have a ton of chemicals... this is where the market is headed," Welton said.

They are planning to open 25 stores throughout California within the next 14 months or so.

Organic Coup are also faced with competitors such has the chains LYFE Kitchen and Dig Inn. These two chains are also focusing on using the best ingredients; however, they don't necessarily insist on them being organic. There is also the V Burger, a new vegan burger joint in New York City also has a GMO-free menu and all organic sides.
