Vatican City Drinks the Most Wine in the World: Vino Victors

Who says that religious types aren't fun?

According to the Independent, a recent study by the Wine Institute revealed that more wine is consumed per person in the Vatican City than in any other country in the world. Considering the nation's small size, that's quite a feat. Of course, when you factor in that the study is done by a per person statistic, it may say more about the inhabitants of the Pope's nation.

The study states that the people of the Vatican pound down over 105 bottles in the course of a year, making the city's 800-person population a rowdy lot. These numbers bested outlying countries, such as France and Italy, which are renowned for their wine consumption. In fact, the consumption in the Vatican was double their numbers. The UK was bested as well, with the Vatican consuming almost three times as much as an average person in the United Kingdom.

Due to the rather similar demographic that makes up the Vatican, the results are unsurprising. Even after factoring in daily communal wine, the residents of the Vatican are more likely to be older males who are highly educated and who eat in large groups. And as we know, a big table may lead to a big bill for booze.

The Vatican is not alone in its small size, as other "micronations" also made their way onto the top of the list.

The Vatican reports that a single supermarket does all of the wine sales for the 800 citizens. The best part: the vino is tax free.
