On Wednesday night, the popular English singer and song-writer, Sam Smith guested on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He got to tell the world how he embarassed himself in front of the Royal Family. Only because Jimmy Fallon brought it up.
"You got to meet the Royal Family," Fallon told Smith. At that point, Smith buried his head in his hands while on public tv, embarassed with what was about to unfold. ".. and it didn't go that well", Fallon added while showing a picture of Smith with the Prince.
Apparently Sam Smith committed a faux pas. The picture Fallon showed was of Smith shaking hands with Prince William - while bowing deeply. Too deeply that Prince William looked amused and so did everybody else in the frame. He shook Prince William's hand while bowing at a full angle. Why did he do that?
Smith blames Downton Abbey. "My issue is that I watch too much Downton Abbey." Smith explains. When meeting royalty, there are always protocols to follow and they did give Smith instructions to bow with one arm behind his back. "I properly went for it!" he exclaimed. Well, you can't blame a guy for trying to do his best for the one job he was asked to do.
He went full blown Downton Abbey. Just a little too much, in a report released by Times. Oh, silly Sam.
During Fallon's interview with Smith, he also did a bit featuring Smith's single "Money on my Mind". Fallon singing the famous verse with a high pitched voice. To which Smith concluded that he loved all his songs except that one. "That one grates on me a little bit", Smith said.
He is set to perform in this weekend's episode of Saturday Night Live.
