Ever since last year the major North Korea-related Sony Pictures leak revealed that Oscar-winning box office sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence had earned less than her male counterparts in "American Hustle," a lot has been discussed regarding the effects of the gender pay gap among Hollywood actresses - and up until recently, a report had claimed that Scarlett Johansson's salary in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" may have been something of a redeemer in the subject.
It seems like the report that Scarlett Johansson's salary was the second highest in the film (after Robert Downey Jr., the highest paid actor in Hollywood for the past two years according to Forbes) was ultimately false, even if it did make sense due to her own star power - but what does it mean in the bigger picture?
According to Variety, while Scarlett Johansson's salary wasn't higher than the majority of her male co-stars as it had been previously reported, it turns out it was still a big victory altogether: she was paid "roughly the same" as co-stars Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).
Cinema Blend had wrongly reported a few days back that Scarlett Johansson's salary for this year's big superhero success had been roughly $20 million, almost $15 million more than that of Evans; however, new reports claim that the actress' wages were more between those of Evans's $6.9 million pay and Hemsworth's $5.4 million, still pretty impressive as it's a step closer towards equality in this arena.
As The Independent reports, Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe has been widely criticized in the media for its overwhelming majority of male and white superheroes, with only two female ones in the Avengers right now, namely Johansson's Black Widow and Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, the latter being introduced earlier this year; however, it's still quite refreshing to see that Scarlett Johansson's salary does reflect her major input into the franchise.
Whether or not Scarlett Johanson's salary reflects it, her net worth of around $80 million (according to Celebrity Net Worth) still shows she's one of the top-paid stars in the film business, male or female.
