Weight Loss: Drink More Diet Coke, Study Says

Other than regular exercise and eating healthy food, health buffs would recommend drinking plenty of water as one of the most effective ways to lose weight. And stay away from sugar, they will add.

If there is one beverage that would give you added calories, it's soda. But study shows that low calorie drinks such as Diet coke can help you in losing weight and even exceed the benefits of water.

The study was conducted by researchers at University of Bristol. Researchers aim to test how low energy sweeteners (LES) - an ingredient present mostly in low-fat beverages, affects energy intake and body weight. These sweeteners are used in the production of most common low-calorie sodas such as Diet Coke (aspartame), Sprite and Coke life (stevia) and Diet Pepsi (saccharin, and sucralose ).

Study found that using LES as a substitute to sugar can decrease energy intake and prevent weight gain. The experts also claim that low-fat calorie drinks can even outweigh the positive effects of water in losing weight since diet drinks do not heightens appetite. "If anything, the evidence suggests these beverages reduced weight more than water." they stated.

Many people must still question the reliability of the study and ask about the benefits of these drinks to one's health. To answer this question, Professor Peter Rogers, lead author of the study from the University of Bristol stated, "We believe we should shift the question from whether [these drinks] are "good" or "bad" and rather focus on how they should be best used in practice to help in the achievement of specific public health goals, such as the reduction of intakes of free sugars and energy."

The researchers, however encourages eating right amount of food to effectively prevent gaining weight. Consuming too much food can impede the weight loss once the extra energy turns into fat when stored in the body.
