Prison Break No More: Indonesia to Set Up Prison Guarded By Crocodiles

Probably inspired by the Bond Film, "Live and Let Die", head of Indonesia's anti-drug agency is proposing to build a unique prison for drug convicts on the death row; an island guarded by crocodiles. Yes, crocodiles.

Budi Waseso, Indonesia's head of anti-drug agency is quite serious about his proposal to have a prison built on an island guarded by crocodiles. He plans to visit various parts of the country to scour for reptiles to guard the jail, The Guardian reports. In an interview with the local outlet Tempo published Sunday, Waseso was quoted saying, "We will place as many crocodiles as we can there. I will search for the most ferocious type of crocodile."

The chief of anti-drug agency believes that crocodiles can be trusted at preventing drug traffickers from escaping prison unlike the human guards who can be bribed.

"You can't bribe crocodiles. You can't convince them to let inmates escape," he said.

The idea may seem outlandish however it's an indication on how far Indonesia is willing to go in its fight against the drug crime, The Washington Post notes.

Just earlier this year, it was reported that the country executed eight people that includes two Australians by firing squad after they were convicted of drug-trafficking charges, despite an international outcry. Indonesia already has some of the toughest anti-narcotics laws in the world including death by firing squad for traffickers.

"We want to send a strong message to drug smugglers that Indonesia is firm and serious in tackling the drug problem and one of the consequences is execution if the court sentences them to death," Indonesian President Joko Widodo told Al Jazeera before the men were executed.

Anti-drugs agency spokesman Slamet Pribadi confirmed that authorities are considering a plan to build a "special prison for death row convicts". The plan is said to be in the early stages. The location or the possible opening date have not been disclosed or decided yet. It is said that only traffickers would be kept in the jail so possible recruitment to drug gangs with other prisoners will not likely happen.

The agency is said to be under discussion with the justice ministry about the innovative prison. What do you think about the prison guarded by blood thirsty crocodiles? Do you think this is just what the system needs or its too outlandish? Let us know by leaving your comments below.
