Hot Weather Workout: Keep Cool as it can Cause Health Complications and Even Death

According to Stuff, when working out, the weather and temperature is important. Grey skies and cool breeze makes it impossible for most people to get up and run. This is what they popularly call bed-weather. However, when they go out and start running, they realize that the cool breeze makes it easier to run. On the other hand, during hot summer days, the feeling is the opposite. The blue skies and the hot temperatures make outdoor exercise close to impossible especially for someone taking their first steps to fitness.

Dr Glen Deakin, senior lecturer in the College of Health Sciences at James Cook University in Queensland said that the reason why hot weather exercise is so hard is that a human body is trying to do two things at the same time. It needs to provide extra blood to the muscles to allow you to work out and at the same time it needs to direct blood to the skin in order to keep the feeling cool.

Too much exposure to the sun, even if you're running near the water, can cause health complications like heat stroke, cramps, exhaustion, rashes and of course, sun burn. In a 2013 study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 618 heat-exposure related deaths were reported.

There is also the danger of over exercising, especially during hot days. Some would say that it is entirely impossible to go over your exercise limit, but not according to a recent study conducted. Extreme workout can be dangerous and take a toll on the durability of the cardiovascular system. Such was the case of famous runners' sudden deaths.

Of course there are ways to make working out easier, and one of them is to ensure that you work out in the cooler parts of the day. When you work out or run in the middle of the day when the temperature is about 30 degrees. The body is working hard to keep cool, the work out won't be effective especially when the humidity is high as well. If a person really wants to exercise during hot weather, try to have a shorter work out high intensity during cooler parts of the day.

When you can't avoid working out during the hot parts of the day, here are some workout tips:

First, it would be best to run where there is less heat and in the shade or run closer to a coastline where you can feel the cool breeze of the sea.

When exercising, choose light color clothing and wear loose-fitting clothes as well.

Cut the exercises into chunks of 10 minute workout and have a 5 minute cooling period.

Most importantly, make sure to stay hydrated, but don't drink too much as well.
