Low Carb Diet for Diabetes: Eat Fat to Stay Healthy

Want to get skinny? Eat fat. That's according to a new report which states that dumping carbs and sugar while eating fats could potentially lead to weight loss and may also help reverse Type II diabetes.

Diabetes occurs when your body causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. It's also called hyperglycemia, and the most common form of this condition is type II diabetes. This particular type means that your body doesn't use insulin properly and over time, your body simply cannot produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose at normal levels, according to the American Diabetes Association.

"Diabetes and obesity is complicated," said Eric Westman, head of the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, in an interview with CBN. "There are lots of factors that are involved, but most experts agree that it's the foods and the beverages that people at that are the major cause for diabetes and obesity in the U.S., and so that should be the major focus of treatment."

In fact, Westman encourages low carb diets. By eliminating sugar and simple carbs and replacing them with healthy fats, like what can be found in nuts and fish, you can both lose weight and potentially reverse diabetes, according to The Examiner.

There is quite a bit of basis to this argument. In 2004, the CDC linked an increase in carbohydrate consumption to an increase in daily calories, according to Wall Street Cheat Sheet. This was found to be particularly true in women.

So want to lose weight and improve your health? A low carb diet may be the answer. By cutting out excess sugars and carbs and instead placing them with healthy alternatives, you can make a change that may just add on years to your life.
