It's Not Security Breach: 200,000 Comcast Customers Told To Reset Usernames and Passwords

Reports are circulating about Comcast forcing its 200,000 customers to change their passwords and information after a suspected security breach Monday this week.  However, the cable giant never acknowledged that the company has been hacked.

Reports from Time Magazine reveals that a list of over 590,000 Comcast accounts were auctioned for $1,000 through a trading site on the Dark Web.  In turn, Comcast changed the login credentials of active accounts.  Around 200,000 of those combinations are said to be active.  The rest on the list are either inactive or are filled with incorrect information.

Furthermore, CSO reports that login information may possibly compromised when customers accidentally installed Malware.  Other reasons cited were phishing or previous major data breaches.  It is not clear however where the data came from.  Comcast stands firm on its declaration that their systems have not been breached.

CSO reports further that the vendor that possibly hacked Comcast account list and put them on sale provided 112 accounts as proof that they are real subscribes of the cable giant.  The seller was reported to be selling 100,000 accounts for $300 and a package of $1,000 for all 590,000 lists.

"We're taking this seriously and we're working to get this fixed for those customers who may have been impacted but the vast majority of information out there was invalid," says a Comcast representative.

Meanwhile Tech Times reports that Philadelphia-based cable company has now begun resetting the passwords for all 590,000 accounts to avoid any unwanted results.

More so, CSO states that Comcast will deal with the concerned clients on a cast-to-case basis.  The cable giant's security team assures that neither their system nor its apps are compromised.

Do you believe that Comcast's information was not hacked?  Or do you think Comcast itself bought the information considering the time that the company responded?  Let us know your thoughts by leaving your comments below.
