‘Rover Power Pick’: Coles Develops World-leading Online Grocery Delivery Technology

Coles has launched a brand new online shopping technology system to help persuade more online shoppers.

Australian Food News reported that the new system makes sure that staff members do not get the wrong item being chosen and to make sure that they are allocated their own areas to stop them having to run around the store. Coles supermarkets group has revealed to The Australian that it created "Rover Power Pick" which simplifies the way Coles staff access products for online orders.

The retail company also said that "Rover Power Pick" is now being used across all of its stores, which handle online deliveries. As a matter of fact, the system has also been vended to US-based computer software, hardware and electronics company NCR which will likely make the technology available to other supermarkets and retailers globally.

Coles has also been trialing an online shopping tool since May 2015. This tool recognizes a customer's voice and compiles a shopping list for the consumer. Called "hiku," it can also be used to scan the barcodes of products already within the home but need topping up.

As the same time as Coles launching its innovative software, a new study has revealed that Australians are shopping online less often but are spending larger amounts when they do purchase online. Moreover, the CommBank Retail Insights study found that the average value of online purchases has jumped 14 percent since the bank's most recent study. The largest growth is occurring within the high-fashion and electrical goods sectors and not in the grocery sector.

Meanwhile, the latest IBISWorld report on Australian grocery shopping revealed that sales between 2014 and 2015 created AU$2 billion in revenue and AUD$79.9 million in profit. AFN added that the same report forecasted 13.6 percent yearly industry growth between 2015 and 2016.
