Hampton Creek Foods' Egg Replacer: Company Announces 23 Million in Funding

According to USA Today, names such as Bill Gates, the wealthiest man in Asia Li Ka-shing, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and Code.org's Ali Partovi are now associated with Hampton Creek Foods, a food technology company.  Hampton Creek just announced over 23 million dollars in Series B funding.

The company has a goal of making healthier food more affordable by making the food cost less to make. What is their idea exactly? It's replacing the egg.

Hampton Creek hopes to synthesize a fake egg that could replace real eggs in flavor and texture. If successful, the company could cut costs on preparing meals by large amounts, and pass the savings on to poorer countries.

Ka-Shing's company, Horizons, started the cash boost with a cool 15.5 million, and for good reason.  Horizons has invested in Facebook, Siri, and Skype, with the hopes of increasing globalization and communication in China.  China currently produces 38% of the world's eggs, and would hold the key to Hampton Creek's success.

Six unnamed Fortune 500 companies have made agreements with Hampton Creek in the past three months, many of them food manufacturers.

What do you think of the incredible, edible egg? And would you eat one that isn't really an egg?
