Bryan Fuller Says Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' TV Series Will Be The Marvel Universe "With Gods"

There is much excitement over the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's bestselling novel 'American Gods,' which will be developed by Brian Fuller for Starz. Considering the rich world and a great number of interesting characters in the book, the 'Hannibal' creator was also questioned by Crave if there is any possibility of bringing to life another Neil Gaiman book which features the colorful African god Anansi.

"Well, we don't have the rights to 'Anansi Boys' but we're hoping that we will eventually," Fuller admitted, adding that the Spider God Anansi will be an important character in the show.

"Mr. Nancy is going to play a major role in the series and potentially what we're looking at with 'American Gods' is developing a Marvel Universe, not with superheroes but with gods. As detailed and integrated as the Marvel Universe is, and doing that with deities is something that excited all of us," he said.

'Anansi Boys' is also a Neil Gaiman bestseller that focuses on the children of Mr. Nancy. In contrast, 'American Gods' covers a wide spectrum of old gods and new gods and Brian Fuller also acknowledged the possibility of creating new TV series about the gods featured in Neil Gaiman's novel as well as the TV show.

"In success we may have spin-offs of 'American Gods' that follow lesser gods in greater detail than you might in the main series, but there's all sorts of potential for this show that we're very excited about and I hope the audience is as enthusiastic as we are so we can bring those dreams to fruition," he said.

'American Gods' follows the story of Shadow Moon, an ex-convict who ends up being employed by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and ends up being caught up in a civil war between ancient gods and the deities of the new age. The TV series is set to air on Starz in 2017.
