Oh Blackberry. When will you ever stop living under a rock? Blackberry had enjoyed its spot at as the number 4 mobile operating system manufacturer after Android, Apple, and Windows. But not anymore.
In a move that would have been unthinkable even just five years ago, Samsung's Tizen has taken over Blackberry's tiny market share, BGR reported.
Tizen is Samsung's initiative to create its own operating system. Though it has zero presence in the US, Samsung had been aggressively introducing the OS to markets in markets outside the country. In places like India where connecting to web via smartphone is a first for many, Samsung had been enjoying marginal success-until now.
India first saw the Tizen in the Samsung Z1 which was debuted in the country last January. It was poorly received at first but Samsung India announced that it had sold 1 million units of the smarthphone by July. Samsung released a second Tizen-powered phone, the Z3, last month, Gadgets 360 reported.
Tizen is also used for other Samsung products like this year's smart TVs, their smartwatch the Gear S2, and some entry level smartphones. These phones, which mimic Android operations, have apparently proven to be alluring enough to snatch the fourth spot from Blackberry, The Verge noted.
The on-its-last-legs company has famously dropped its pride and will be rolling out the new Android-powered Blackberry Priv. It had been widely accepted that the touchscreen-QWERTY hybrid Priv is Blackberry's last attempt at a smartphone before fading into oblivion.
Blackberry CEO John Chen has already announced that the company will fold if it cannot successfully create marketable hardware. Even if the Priv proves to be a success, however, Blackberry OS is all but done. Although, the company can still boast its ranking above Firefox OS for now.
