New Netflix Goal: Dabble in Bollywood and Anime Programming

Netflix thinks that its viewers need more shows. The company's CEO Reed Hastings went on stage with New York Times journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at the DealBook conference and revealed that they are looking to expand the unique programs currently offered to subscribers.

Two types of programs they are checking out are Bollywood-style shows and anime, Tech Radar reported. Hastings said that their experimental shows have been met with great success and that the possible expansion is in line with the company's vision. He gave the example of Narcos which is a crime drama on the rise of Pablo Escobar, the notorious Colombian drug lord.

Hastings added, "You go beyond the normal spectrum to get quality and you really stretch to the things that you can do. On-demand and the internet really gives you that power." Hastings has global audiences in mind when they started mulling over the possibility of offering Bollywood and anime on Netflix.

Hastings and the rest of Netflix are going on an aggressive campaign to produce high quality shows, The Verge noted. He said that they would be spending $5 billion next year on their content. That amount will be used in the acquisition of high-profile names like comedian Aziz Anzari and rights to indie films. Beasts of No Nation is one prominent example of movie rights that they bought, BGR reported.

The CEO also had this to say regarding Netflix's future plans, "We're hopeful that we'll over time make a great Bollywood show, make a great anime show. It might not be that that Bollywood show is for [Showtime CEO] Matt Blank. It might be that it's more segmented, but again the internet let's you do that. I think that's the key in that enablement."
