According to an analysis published in Social Science & Medicine, the kind of responsibility the people have at their work can impact their possibility of becoming obese.
In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults all over the world were overweight; of these census, more than 600 million were obese. Research workers concludes that the type of work people do can contribute to obesity.
Generally, developing an employee's level of command at work has been thought-out to be positive.
In the Job Demand-Control-Support (JDCS) model of evaluating psychosocial attributes of the workplace, two psychological measures of job supervision usually referred to are skill judgment, having and being able to apply competence, and decision authority.
According to the Medical News Today, until now, the two factors have been deliberated together when it comes to their result on health, because although high job requirements are thought-out to be stressful, high job control is recognized to help alleviate the effects of high demands. However, the new study recommends that skill prudence and decision-making should be treated independently, specifically with remarks to obesity.
Higher obesity risk for decision-makers
As reported by the researchers from the University of Adelaide, Central Queensland University and the University of South Australia, they considered the data from 450, mostly middle-aged participants - 230 women and 220 men - working in an array of various occupations, both white and blue-collar.
They measured participants' weight , height and waist girth and administered telephone interviews to gather data about their work. They used the JDCS model for their assessment.
After regulating for sex, age, work hours, job nature and household income, they realized that the two factors were similarly strongly linked with obesity, with exceptionally opposing effects.
The findings show that having the abilities and the independence to use them at work is associated to a lower body mass index (BMI) and a smaller waist size, whereas requiring to make a lot of judgment is associated to a bigger waist size.
As per the Medical News Today ,the percentage of people affected by obesity around the world will rise from 13% to 17%, unless action is taken.
