Top Science Writer Disagrees That Taking Alcohol Causes Dementia

Tony Edwards, a writer, is an author of a latest book about alcohol and health. He devoted a whole chapter to mental functioning.

The writer disagrees about the headlines like 'Give up all drink or risk dementia' and Guidelines On Delaying Dementia, Disability And Frailty In Later Life. According to him all of the headlines are wrong the same as saying 'smoking does not cause lung cancer'.

Because of his devotion and study about alcohol and health he said that everyday drinking does not cause dementia, but it actually prevents it. Alcohol reduces the risk of dementia.

Studies about the effect of alcohol intake on dementia have been conducted in Nineties. In the study, researchers kept a statistics of 6,000 women aged over 65 in care homes, some are regular drinkers. All women hasd sound minds and in the beginning their alcohol intake was noted and the date of first diagnosis of dementia. These women were tracked for more than six years. And the result, the non-drinkers was diagnosed to have dementia first.

But the results couldn't have been clearer.

This study was followed by another U.S. paper with almost identical results. Also a German research observed 3,200 people over the age of 75, approximately partly of whom were regular drinkers. And once more the teetotalers had a large amount of higher threat of dementia than drinkers.

Heavy drinkers that drink half a bottle of wine also halved the danger of having dementia compared to non-drinkers. While those who drank a little less than that, decrease their probability of receiving 'overall dementia' by two-thirds, and Alzheimer's particularly to zero.

Being a non-drinker won't just increase the risk of dementia, it's been linked to a number of other diseases. Indeed, one reliable scientific discovery which particularly bold abstainers is the information that they have a tendency to pass away earlier than drinkers.
