Amanda Bynes Found 'Mentally Competent' to Stand Trail on DUI Charges

Hollywood problem child Amanda Bynes is reportedly making progress in treatment.

According to PEOPLE, the actress has been declared mentally competent to stand trial for her 2012 DUI, a judge ruled Wednesday.

A judge in a Los Angeles mental health court determined, based on court medical evaluation, the 27-year-old actress is capable of understanding the criminal charges she will be facing. Bynes, attorney, Rich Hutton, did not object the judges' decision, E! News reported.

Sources said the former child star is likely to plead out in the DUI case for a plea bargain. Bynes mother, Lynn Bynes, was later granted custody of her daughter.

In July, the "What A Girl Wants" actress was placed on a involuntary hold after she reportedly started a fire in a neighbor's driveway. She was hospitalized, an extra 30 days based on doctor's request. TMZ reported the actress was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

In October, Bynes' family released a statement confirming she was "making great strides toward recovery" but aksed for continued privacy

In April, the actress was arrested for suspicion of DUI after reportedly hitting a sheriff's car in Los Angeles. Bynes was also charged with driving with a suspended license. Bynes was scheduled to appear in court early September, but her attorney requested a mental evaluation and said the actress was unable to fully understand the legal charges she would be facing.

The actress made headlines for locking herself in dressing rooms for hours, shaving her head, posting half nude photos of herself on Twitter and insulting celebrities such as rapper Drake and President Barack Obama, by calling them "ugly."

PEOPLE reported the actress next court date is set for Jan. 7, when both parties will reevaluate where Bynes stands.
