It may seem odd, but adding insects into cocktails is actually a good idea - its helps with food shortage and it even adds flavor!
Launching a Kickstarter campaign on October 20, Critter Bitters are cocktail bitters that are made with toasted crickets. The campaign aims to reach a $21,000 goal by November 17.
Their own creators dub it as "the gateway to eating insects." In fact, their website even reads, "Critter Bitters take the 'ick factor' out of entomophagy. Cocktails won't save the world, but eating bugs might."
Yes, these cocktail bitters help resolve the issue on world food storage by eating insects. In fact, Critter Bitter creators Lucy Knops and Julia Plevin founded the company as an answer to the 2013 UN FAO report on edible insects and resolving food shortage.
Mashable reports:
"'The biggest barrier to overcome is the 'ick factor,'' Plevin tells Mashable. 'Two billion people around the world already eat insects. We wanted to introduce eating insects to NYC in a way that fit into our culture - there's a booming cocktail culture here and people are more willing to try new things when it's in a cocktail.'"
Not only that, but Lucy Knops says that "crickets infused in alcohol have a rich, nutty flavor." She continued, "We add other roots and herbs to the bitters to highlight the crickets."
The roots and herbs also have medicinal properties. So really, there's nothing bad about buying more of these Critter Bitters, as it seems.
You can cop these in two different flavors, too: toasted cricket and pure cricket. The latter is a tincture made from toasted cricket flavoring, while toasted cricket was made with real crickets.
Those wanting to cop a bottle of Critter Bitters will need to shell out $30 per bottle. It's only currently available for pre-order on Kickstarter.
