Sherlock Special Getting Movie Treatment, Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC Consulting Detective Playing On China Cinemas

While fans await for the release of the upcoming "Sherlock" special this Christmas, a one-off episode set in Victorian-era London like the original stories by sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it seems like one market in particular is getting a different treatment as to how the story's being shown, as it's announced that China will get theater showings.

It seems like the BBC modern-day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes starring Benedict Cumberbatch has turned a lot of profit in the Chinese market, which has prompted the network to make a deal with distributors across the Asian country to screen the "Sherlock" special in theaters across China.

According to The Guardian, the transaction to screen the "Sherlock" special on theaters in China is part of a larger set of deals between Britain and the Asian country as part of a partnership between BBC Worldwide and Chinese media organizations.

The deal includes the co-production of a new feature film, "Earth: One Amazing Day," a sequel to box office documentary smash "Earth," a BBC production that grossed $92 million worldwide, a particularly impressive amount for the genre; there will be other productions from the deal as well, besides showing the "Sherlock" special on the big screen.

Radio Times reports that the "Sherlock" special is now being helmed as a "global cinema event" as it will be shown in China and other countries, with a set of different new collaborations also in the works.

"Today's announcements herald an exciting new collaboration between the Chinese and British creative industries. There is a keen appetite in China for premium British content, and creating two new cinematic experiences in partnership with SMG Pictures is a landmark moment for two of our biggest brands, 'Sherlock' and 'BBC Earth," said BBC Worldwide chief executive Tim Davie, according to Variety.
